How to choose the right sized diving suit?

(3)

First of all, what is a neoprene wetsuit?

Comment choisir sa taille de combinaison de plongée

It's a garment whose main aim is to protect you from the cold when doing water sports. Whatever sport you are doing, your wetsuit should be as close-fitting as possible to perform its role as a thermal insulator most effectively.

How does a neoprene wetsuit protect from the cold?

As its name suggests, a neoprene wetsuit uses neoprene technology; the material is composed of microbubbles. The more bubbles, the softer the wetsuit. However, when under pressure, for example when diving, the bubbles will be crushed and the thermal protection will become less effective. That is why divers sometimes use wetsuits up to 7mm thick.

The qualities of good neoprene, aside from its light weight, are:

-its elasticity
-its thermal insulation
-its resistance to wear
-its ability to retain its original shape

In practice, the wetsuit protects the user from the cold by forming a thin film of water which will increase in temperature on contact with the skin.

Your first neoprene wetsuit:

Don't be surprised if you don't feel very comfortable when you first try on a wetsuit. Since the wetsuit will become your second skin, you can sometimes experience some discomfort the first time you try it on, especially in a shop when the temperature is around 20 degrees.
Nevertheless, as regards your comfort, you should not feel too squashed around your neck, arms and rib cage.

Take your measurements before buying:

You will need a tape measure and should take the measurements directly against your skin as explained below.

Women's measurements

Cup measurement

  • Take a tape measure and place it around the largest part of your bust (level with your nipples)
  • Ensure that it is parallel to the ground.
  • Lift your head, tighten the tape measure, and breathe normally.
  • Block the tape and read your measurement

Waist size

  • Take a tape measure and place it just above your tummy button, at the narrowest part of your waist.
  • Lift your head, tighten the tape measure, and breathe normally.
  • Block the tape and read your measurement

Hip measurement

  • Take a tape measure and place it across the widest part of your bottom.
  • Ensure that it is parallel to the ground.
  • Block the tape and read your measurement

Women's size chart:
Below is the size chart that we use when designing our women's neoprene wetsuits.

Example of size choices:

Example No. 1: -if your bust measurement is 92 cm, your waist measurement 73 cm and your hip measurement 100 cm, then according to our size chart, you are a grouped size M or a size by size 12.

Example No. 2: -if your bust measurement is 114 cm, your waist measurement 106 cm and your hip measurement 128 cm, then according to our size chart, you are a grouped size 2XL or a size by size 24.

If your measurements do not seem to fit, use your bust measurement.

Children's measurements
The measuring technique for children is the same as for adults.

Below is the size chart that we use when designing our children's neoprene wetsuits. Below is the size chart that we use when designing our women's neoprene wetsuits. If the child's measurements do not seem to fit, use their chest measurement.

Tribord advice:

Your stature (size) should not be the deciding factor when choosing your neoprene wetsuit.

The essential factors are:

  • your chest measurement, taken at the level of your nipples
  •  your waist measurement
  •  your hip measurement

Good to know:

If there are folds around your torso and thighs, it won't hinder your movement although the thermal insulation will be less effective. All the same,  your chest size should be the main priority to avoid making breathing uncomfortable.
